Great Missionary Lives: David Livingston

David Livingston’s legacy was not just of a whole-hearted effort to reach native Africans, but also a life of deep adventure. He was as much an explorer as he was a missionary. While in South Africa, he dreamed of and eventually worked tirelessly for a “Missionary Road” or “God’s Highway” in the African Continent. He ended up exploring 1500 mile stretch of the African continent to bring the gospel to unreached peoples.

From his exploring and his acquired knowledge of the continent, he was able to speak out fervently of the evils of African slavery, which eventually helped outlaw the practice.

While we may not completely agree with all his teachings, his life of bravery and adventurousness certainly is worth imitating!

Brought by faithful hands over land and sea,” his tombstone reads, “David Livingstone: missionary, traveler, philanthropist. For 30 years his life was spent in an unwearied effort to evangelize the native races, to explore the undiscovered secrets, and to abolish the slave trade.

“Set Infinite Value on Immortal Souls”

William Carey is regarded as the “Father of Modern Protestant Missions”. For 41 years he preached the gospel to India. He is also credited, along with his team, for making the first Bengali translation of the Bible. While we do not agree with his doctrinal stance, he is undoubtedly a very important figure in the history of missions.
If you are considering the OYC, you may find his 11 mission commandments encouraging. Here are a few:

1.  Set an infinite value on immortal souls.

9.  Work with all your might to translate the Bible into their languages.  Build schools to this end.

11.  Give yourself totally to this glorious cause.  Surrender your time, gifts, strength, families, the very clothes you wear

Should I Register or Wait?

two-roads

If you’re reading this, there could be several reasons why you feel like you want to wait before registering:

  • I’m not sure if I’m ready.
  • I don’t feel like I’m qualified to go.
  • I am still in school. I need to finish school first.
  • I don’t know if I will be helpful at the site where I want to go.
  • I don’t know whether I can financially support myself on the mission field.

All of these reasons express some sort of uncertainty. They start with “I don’t feel like…”, “I’m not sure…”, or “I don’t know…”. Even the one about finishing school is based on the assumption that you can’t finish your degree on the mission field.

The Bible tells us exactly what to do when we plan to do something but we’re not sure or we don’t know if our feelings or assumptions are true.

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed

Before I went on a One Year Challenge, I talked to the brothers in my household, I talked to my family, and later I talked to my campus minister and my church leader. I heard sermons about going on mission. I talked to everyone except the disciples who are actually at the site where I wanted to go. Later I finally registered and contacted the site leader there.

It is not hard to imagine (but sometimes hard to trust) that the church leaders and disciples who are actually at the site know better; that they know if and where you can find jobs in that country; that they know if you will be helpful at that site; that they have experience helping disciples get trained to be effective in that mission field; that they might even have experience helping someone finish their degree while on mission. Don’t discount the fact that they might be an invaluable resource.

Registering is the first step to getting in contact with your OYC site leader and getting advice from them. What are you waiting for? Register now!

From Thomas Jones and Michael Fontenot’s The Prideful Soul’s Guide To Humility:

True humility is not passiveness, it is not cowardice, it does not become a doormat, it is not a pious act and it is not foolishness. True humility is full of wisdom; it takes heart and faith; it heroic and bears good fruit.

Great Missionary Lives: Francis Xavier

God’s timing is not our timing. How Francis Xavier became a missionary is an inspiring example of this. When the King of Portugal, John III, asked to send Jesuits to colonies in the Orient, Francis was not slated to go. But only after one Jesuit fell ill, Francis was sent to replace him. What followed was an enduring missionary legacy with many hearing the gospel in the Philippines and Japan. While we would not agree with Xavier’s doctrinal leanings, nonetheless his life is an example of being ready to go even when one is not prepared.

…Francis Xavier, was given time only to mend his cassock before shipping out. Such was the beginning of one of the most wide-ranging and successful of missionary endeavors.

Confronting Idolatry

idolatry-part-2-1

Making disciples of all nations involves helping friends turn away from idols and false gods. This will inevitably lead to conflict and calling people to repent. But part of missions work is being confrontational. Daniel Strange’s article how ministry confronts idolatry is a good read, especially for those who are looking for deeper reasons for joining the OYC.

Idolatry is always ultimately against God and against the way he has chosen to reveal himself to us. Its scope is broad enough to include not simply displacements of God, but also distortions of him, and even denials of him (for atheism makes up the ultimate false story about God: that he does not exist).
