Mary Slessor was a missionary to the Okoyong people in Nigeria. She was a fearless woman, preaching the gospel in places where missionaries had been killed previously. Though she was never a mother, her personality and character won the respect of tribesman all over the region, so much so that they called her “Ma”. While we wouldn’t agree with all that she taught, her bravery to love those around her, even at gunpoint, is inspiring.

‘Come here, you!’ [she said] to a man who with his gun up, was about to fire. ‘Give me that gun, and go and find your chief and bring him here!’
