What is your Christmas gift going to be?

We often think about what we want to get during Christmas, or what we can give. We often feel overwhelmed with all the festivities and traditions.

In light of this us many will return to the classic question – What is the true meaning of Christmas?

A lot of us will recall classic stories and movies that try to bring us back to the heart of Christmas.

Here are some examples:

In the classic It’s A Wonderful Life, the protagonist struggles to find value in his life shows us that the meaning of Christmas is to be grateful and to appreciate our friendships. “Remember no man is a failure who has friends.”

The movie The Grinch tells us that Christmas is about family and not about what we have or what we want to get.

Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol tells us that Christmas is about giving and about selflessness.

While all these Christmas messages have a small part of the true meaning of Christmas in them, we can find the true meaning of Christmas in the Bible.

Specifically, Christmas is about the Son of God coming down to earth and beginning His message and mission on earth. In Matthew 1:23 it says:

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

The name Immanuel is significant, especially when we think about it in terms of the mission. Out of love, God decided to be with us. He embarked on a journey into a “foreign” land. Jesus left the comforts of heaven to be with us. He learned the language of his people and he related to our culture of weakness and sinfulness. He took on our fleshy existence. And most significantly, Jesus had a message on His heart. His ministry was the message of the Kingdom of Heaven.

When disciples go on a One Year Challenge they do the same thing. They enter a foreign land and adjust to a new way of life. They do this all in effort to be with people, people who have not heard of the Gospel and to share the message with them. It is the life that Jesus walked before us, and it is the life that we get to follow.

Are you still looking for the perfect Christmas gift? Why not consider giving a year to God by going on a One Year Challenge? Consider giving a year of your life to His mission and His cause. Consider giving the unreached peoples the true meaning of Christmas.
