The Secret to Self-Control is Grace

The book of Titus tells us that it is grace that trains us to say no to ungodliness, rather than technique or determination. If we want to be full of self-control, we must be full of God’s grace.

The same grace that first bid you to say “No” is still with you. When your former lusts appear on your doorstep today, grace will be with you to train you. He will give you everything you need to say, “I’m not yours anymore,” and shut the door. For the grace that has appeared is the man Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom who came to make you his (Titus 2:14).

From Douglas A. Jacoby’s A Quick Overview of the Bible: Understanding How All the Pieces Fit Together

The church was never meant to be an association of nice people, but an army on the move. Though we should not ignore the family imagery in Scripture, there is a reason the church is persecuted: Its message is disturbing, and those who proclaim this message must not compromise. In a world as dark and dysfunctional as ours, those who take the light will at the times appear abnormal and even ungracious (though they aren’t).

Leading Difficult People

Leading difficult people often will make us angry or just irritated. Irritation, however small, is an indicator that we are judging people by our own standards rather than on righteousness. How should we lead irritating people? We should always lead according to the standard of righteousness.

What’s the solution? Humility. James phrases this as “receiving with meekness the implanted word,” meaning that we do not insist on our standard of what others ought to be but instead submit to the Bible, the record of God’s merciful heart toward His people. If God were as easily annoyed as we are, we’d all be in deep trouble.

It’s easy to have a lot of false ideas about evangelism. Here are five myths that we can easily believe.

  1. Myth #1: Evangelism is something I do myself.

  2. Myth #2: We don’t have to speak the gospel—we just live it. Or at least wait and earn the right to speak.

  3. Myth #3: Evangelism requires special training.

  4. Myth #4: It’s better not to talk about hell.

  5. Myth #5: I’ll get to it eventually.
