Don’t be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make use of. One man gets only a week’s value out of a year while another man gets a full year’s value out of a week.
- Charles Richards

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.”

Colossians 4:5 (NIV)
This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

“making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

Ephesians 5:16  (NIV)

“Spiritual leadership is using God’s methods to get his people where he wants them in reliance on his power.”

Read John Piper’s article on this subject, there are some terrific examples and clear points to help Christians develop in this area.

Books

This week we draw again from Thomas Brook’s classic, “Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices”

“in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.”

2 Corinthians 2:11

“First, You must know that every man cannot be excellent, yet every man may be useful. An iron key may unlock the door with a golden treasure behind it; yes, iron can do some things that gold cannot.”

“remember this, that your life is short, your duties many, your assistance great, and your reward sure; therefore faint not, hold on and hold up, in ways of well-doing, and heaven shall make amends for all!”

You can buy the book here (extremely cheap!) and likely find it online in pdf form for free. WELL WORTH THE READ! Especially if you are considering taking the One Year Challenge. Satan will certainly oppose any who who would attempt great things for God in going on mission, it is our job to put on the armor that God has provided!

If you’re thinking of taking the One Year Challenge, you may be going to a place where the culture is different, or perhaps even opposite in some ways. It is important to do the work in learning how to cross cultures. The gospel is not divided by these lines. At our roots, people are the same, but connecting takes some surface-mid level work.

Brazil, a large an religious nation which is a melting pot of cultures, customs and histories. Religion is a key part of the country’s make-up, and is comprised mostly between catholic and evangelical. You may be reminded of the key role Christianity has in the culture by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.

With such a large role in culture, the standard of Christianity can suffer because people fall into the trap of following culture rather than Jesus.

You can read about religion in Brazil here. And the relationship between evangelicals and catholics here.

More importantly, you can check out our OYC site in Goiania, Brazil!

William Carey

At a meeting of Baptist leaders in the late 1700s, a newly ordained minister stood to argue for the value of overseas missions. He was abruptly interrupted by an older minister who said, “Young man, sit down! You are an enthusiast. When God pleases to convert the heathen, he’ll do it without consulting you or me.”

That such an attitude is inconceivable today is largely due to the subsequent efforts of that young man, William Carey.

You can read the full article here.

William Carey had an impact on India and the world that is still very much alive today. He and his team faced countless trials, fruitless years and extreme opposition as they brought the gospel to the people of India. In a time filled with prejudice, the caste system and division, their living according the the eternal word completely defiant to the status quo and current.

Today, the status quo and current might be less rapid in the other direction, and it may look different, but the world is certainly not aligned with God’s will. So we must ponder what it means for us today to be transformed in the renewing of our minds, and not conforming to the world.

Books

An oldie but a goodie! This book, written around 400 years ago, details the ways to defend oneself from the schemes Satan uses to tear Christians away from the foot of the cross. Drawing from the scripture quoted below, Thomas Brooks guides the believer through the remedies they may practically employ to protect themselves and their way of thinking.

“in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.”

2 Corinthians 2:11

“[I]t is not hasty reading–but serious meditating upon holy and heavenly truths, that make them prove sweet and profitable to the soul. It is not the bee’s touching of the flower, which gathers honey–but her abiding for a time upon the flower, which draws out the sweet. It is not he who reads most–but he who meditates most, who will prove the choicest, sweetest, wisest and strongest Christian.”
